Types of High Voltage Switch Equipment

AIS (Air Insulated Switchgear)

Air-insulated Switchgear (AIS) uses air as the primary insulation medium to isolate and control the electrical power system. AIS is typically used for lower voltage applications and is known for its simple design, low cost, and ease of maintenance.

GIS (Gas Insulated Switchgear)

Gas-insulated Switchgear (GIS) uses sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) gas as the primary insulation medium. GIS is designed for high-voltage applications and is known for its compact design, high reliability, and superior performance.

Application of High Voltage Switch Equipment

High voltage switchgear finds application in a diverse range of industries and electrical contexts, typically in systems handling voltages of 36kV and higher. Common settings for HV switchgear include:

  • Power plants, for the safe disconnection of generators and equipment from the grid.
  • Electricity transmission and distribution networks, used to connect or disconnect segments of the network.
  • Substations, where it connects or disconnects transformers, capacitor banks, and other equipment.
  • Large industrial and commercial facilities, for connecting or disconnecting equipment from the power supply or controlling large motors.

Components of High Voltage Switch Equipment

Circuit breakers
A circuit breaker is an automatically operated electrical switch designed to protect an electrical circuit from damage caused by overload or short circuit. In high voltage switchgear, the breaker is a complex device that acts within milliseconds to clear load and fault currents.

Instrument transformers
These high voltage switchgear components act as measuring devices and include current and voltage transformers, commonly abbreviated as CTs and VTs. They reduce current and voltage levels so the amounts flowing through an electric system can be safely monitored. Instrument transformers activate the protective relays, or they may send the fault signal directly to the control center.

Earthing switches
An earthing switch function is to connect an electrical circuit to earth when an isolator is opened or when the breaker opens during a fault. This is usually done to remove residual charges from a line that has been disconnected from the power supply. It ensures the protection of a power system as well as the safety of personnel.

Step up/down transformer
These are the largest (and most expensive) high voltage switchgear parts. The step-up transformer increases the voltage of an electrical signal so it can be transported over long distances with minimal power loss. The step-down transformer does the opposite, decreasing the voltage before it reaches equipment that can’t handle high voltages.

Disconnecting switch
In high voltage switchgear, disconnectors are simple mechanical switches that can open and close an electrical circuit. They are used to connect or disconnect equipment from the power supply usually for maintenance purposes. These HV switchgear parts are also called isolators.

Relays
A relay is an electrically operated switch that can be used to turn on or turn off a circuit. Protective relays automatically detect faults in the electrical network and activate the circuit breaker. The breaker then disconnects the faulty equipment from the power supply while also helping to extinguish the resulting arc.

Busbars
Busbars are located all over a high voltage switchgear installation. They are, by definition, low impedance conductors that connect electrical equipment together. When used in high tension switchgear, busbars connect high voltage circuit breakers and other HV components, helping to deliver power from one point to another.

Surge arresters
A surge arrester is a device used to protect equipment from damage caused by transient overvoltages, such as lightning strikes, and other causes such as switching surges. HV switchgear arresters help to protect equipment by dissipating the surge energy before it reaches the equipment.

Batteries
In many high voltage switchgear installations, batteries are used as a backup power source in case of a power outage. The batteries provide enough power to operate the circuit breaker and other HV components long enough to safely disconnect the equipment from the power supply.

Earthing grid
This is a system of metal rods or plates buried in the ground that helps to dissipate electrical energy into the earth. The earthing grid protects equipment from damage caused by lightning strikes and other transient overvoltages.

How to Maintain High Voltage Switch Equipment

Follow the maintenance guidelines
Inspecting, Cleaning, Tightening, and Exercising the switchgear is imperative from time to time. Depending on the functional environment, the frequency of these activities might change. With areas such as mills, textile, etc. where dust and fiber might easily accumulate on the equipment, cleaning and maintaining becomes an important activity. Lubrication of the switchgear is also necessary to ensure no equipment degradation and smooth functioning.

Annual maintenance contract
Each product has a specific individual shelf-life. This useful life is largest at the beginning of the operation and decreases over time due to various reasons such as power fluctuations, operational issues & unfavorable environmental conditions.

Keep a track
Monitoring your switchgear on a regular basis is imperative to ensure any break-down, wear, and tear, or degradation of insulation is detected well beforehand and the corrective measures are taken. Even if the switchgear is outdated, they tend to have a long shelf-life if they are maintained well. Ensure that you follow all the maintenance instructions shared to you by the service/product provider. Keep a track of the data to monitor the performance of your switchgear.

Stay up-to-date
A significant cost and longevity of the system without any downtime can be achieved with regular and strategic replacement and upgradation. It is a cost-effective and low maintenance technique. Rather than purchasing the whole new set, upgrading the already existing system is not only easy on the pockets but, a sure shot life-extending hack.

Utilize predictive maintenance tools
While monitoring the on-going data and analyzing the output, an automated system whether online or installed that warns and alerts about a forthcoming break-down or system failure can be extremely handy. Online monitoring tools are extremely feasible since they can be accessed from any place and at any time. They essentially run a continuous survey and update the user in real-time. This can be extremely beneficial for faults that can not be detected once in a blue moon physical inspection.
