SF₆ – The Environmental Cost of a Power Industry Hero
Sulfur hexafluoride (SF₆) gas has been used in high-voltage switchgear for over half a century due to its excellent insulation and arc-quenching properties. However, this "industrial hero" is one of the most potent greenhouse gases known: its global warming potential (GWP) is 23,900 times that of carbon dioxide, and it can remain stably in the atmosphere for over 3,200 years. Approximately 80% of the SF₆ produced globally each year ends up in power generation equipment. With carbon neutrality goals sweeping the globe, finding environmentally friendly alternatives has become a common challenge for the power industry.
Vacuum Circuit Breakers – A Zero-Carbon Alternative
Vacuum circuit breakers seal their contacts in a high-vacuum environment, using the vacuum medium to quench the arc, while the external insulation uses natural gases such as dry air and pure nitrogen, without using any fluorinated greenhouse gases throughout the entire process. Compared to SF₆ switches, vacuum circuit breakers achieve true "zero carbon emissions" during operation and maintenance, eliminate the toxicity issues associated with gas decomposition products, and are easier to recycle, making them the most commercially promising green alternative technology currently available.
China's Practice – From 252kV to a Full Range of Breakthroughs
In recent years, China has achieved several milestones in the field of high-voltage vacuum switches. In 2025, the world's first 252kV single-break vacuum circuit breaker was successfully connected to the grid at a 220kV substation in Guangdong, marking my country's leading mastery of the core technology for vacuum breaking at this voltage level. In the same year, the world's largest 126kV environmentally friendly gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) was put into commercial operation in Wuhan, with an estimated lifecycle reduction of approximately 100,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions. Furthermore, the ZW68 pole-mounted vacuum circuit breaker, suitable for distribution networks, has been deployed in over 6,800 units across 19 provinces. These achievements demonstrate that environmentally friendly vacuum switches have moved from the laboratory to large-scale application.
Challenges and Prospects
That said, vacuum circuit breakers still face practical constraints at 550 kV and above-notably in insulation coordination and high-capacity breaking. Therefore, a total replacement of SF₆ will take time and continued R&D.. However, the pace of technological progress is far exceeding expectations, and a "fluorine-free, zero-carbon" switchgear revolution is accelerating from distribution networks to transmission networks. For international customers who are concerned about sustainable development and ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance), embracing this green transformation is not only a choice to fulfill climate responsibility but also a way to seize future market opportunities.
