Although both vacuum contactor and vacuum circuit breaker use vacuum environments for circuit control, there are significant differences between the two in terms of function, structure and application scenarios. The specific analysis is as follows:
1. Core function differences
- Vacuum contactor
Control function mainly: mainly used for circuit on-off control, suitable for small current scenarios with frequent operations (such as motor start, stop, speed regulation, etc.).
No protection function: short-circuit current cannot be interrupted, and overload protection requires external fuses or circuit breakers.
- Vacuum circuit breaker
Protection function mainly: with multiple protection functions such as short circuit, overload, undervoltage, etc., can automatically cut off fault current, and support manual tripping.
Can act frequently: high-frequency operation is allowed (such as frequent motor start), but the number of actions must be limited (usually lower than that of contactors).
2. Structural and performance differences
- Arc extinguishing method
Vacuum contactors rely on electromagnetic suction to open and close contacts, and there is no special arc extinguishing device.
The vacuum circuit breaker uses a magnetic field to extinguish the arc through the vacuum arc extinguishing chamber, and has higher insulation and arc extinguishing performance.
- Contacts and current carrying capacity
The contactor contact is a flat plate structure, and the rated current is usually below 1kA, which cannot directly interrupt the fault current.
The circuit breaker contact structure is complex, and the rated short-circuit breaking current can reach 63kA, which meets the fault current requirements of the power grid.
- Mechanical life and maintenance
The contactor has high mechanical strength and strong impact resistance, but the number of operations is limited (about 300,000 times or more).
The circuit breaker operating mechanism is complex, the maintenance cost is high, but the life is long.
3. Application scenario comparison
Vacuum contactor: Applicable to low-voltage power distribution systems (such as factory equipment, lighting systems), emphasizing high reliability and long life.
Vacuum circuit breaker: Applicable to high-voltage power systems (such as substations, transmission lines), and protection and control functions must be taken into account.
4. Other differences
- Price difference:
The cost of contactors is lower (about half of that of circuit breakers), and vacuum circuit breakers are more expensive due to their more comprehensive functions.
- Protection configuration:
Circuit breakers can be used alone, and contactors need to be combined with fuses to form an "FC circuit" for protection.

In summary
The two have their own emphasis on functional positioning, structural design, and application scenarios, and appropriate equipment needs to be selected according to actual needs.
