What does high-voltage primary equipment primarily include?

High-voltage primary equipment refers to major electrical apparatus directly utilized in the processes of power generation, transmission, transformation, and distribution, which are designed to withstand high voltages and large currents, and serve the functions of circuit control, protection, measurement, and switching. These devices typically operate within power systems with a rated voltage of 1 kV or higher. Common types of high-voltage primary equipment primarily include the following categories:

 

Switchgear (Used for the switching and isolation of circuits)

1. High-Voltage Circuit Breakers (e.g., oil circuit breakers, SF₆ circuit breakers, vacuum circuit breakers, etc.)

• Function: To connect or disconnect a circuit under normal operating conditions; capable of rapidly interrupting fault currents during a fault and possessing arc-extinguishing capabilities.

2. Disconnecting Switches (Isolators)

• Function: Primarily used to isolate the power source during equipment maintenance, creating a visible air gap; they lack arc-extinguishing capabilities and must be operated only under no-load or low-current conditions.

3. Load Switches

• Function: Capable of connecting and disconnecting a circuit under normal load conditions, though generally unable to interrupt short-circuit currents; they are frequently used in conjunction with fuses.

 

Protection and Control Equipment

1. High-Voltage Fuses

· Function: To provide protection by interrupting the circuit-via the melting of the fuse element-in the event of an overload or short circuit.

2. Surge Arresters (e.g., Zinc Oxide Arresters)

· Function: To protect electrical equipment from damage caused by lightning-induced overvoltages or switching overvoltages.

 

Current-Carrying Equipment (Used for Current Transmission)

1. Busbars

·Function: Conductors used to collect and distribute electrical energy; typically made of copper or aluminum, and available in various forms such as rectangular or tubular shapes.

2. Power Cables

·Function: Used for the transmission and distribution of electrical energy; suitable for underground applications or environments with limited space. Types include high-voltage cross-linked cables, among others.

3. Insulators

·Function: To support and secure live conductors while providing electrical insulation; examples include pin-type insulators, suspension insulators, etc.

 

Measurement and Monitoring Equipment (Part of the Primary Equipment's Detection Subsystem)

1. Current Transformer (CT)

• Function: To proportionally transform high currents into low currents for use by measuring instruments and protection devices.

2. Voltage Transformer (PT or VT)

• Function: To proportionally transform high voltages into low voltages for use in measurement and protection.

 

Transformers (Classified as primary equipment, but also one of the core components)

1. Power Transformers

· Function: Used to step up (step-up transformers) or step down (step-down transformers) voltage levels; they are critical components within the power system.

2. Instrument Transformers (Included under Measurement and Monitoring; also classified as primary equipment)
