What are the differences between oil circuit breakers and vacuum circuit breakers?

Oil circuit breakers and vacuum circuit breakers are two types of circuit breakers commonly used in power systems. They have significant differences in arc extinguishing media, structural characteristics, and applicable scenarios.

1. Structure and volume

Oil circuit breaker:

The structure is complex, requiring an oil tank, oil level monitoring device and pressure relief mechanism, and the volume is large.

Vacuum circuit breaker:

The arc extinguishing chamber is a sealed ceramic or glass structure, with a small volume and light weight, suitable for compact switchgear (such as medium-voltage switchgear).

2. Maintenance and life Oil circuit breaker:

After the contact is worn, the oil needs to be replaced and the carbide needs to be cleaned.

Vacuum circuit breaker:

The vacuum arc extinguishing chamber is sealed and basically maintenance-free.

The contact wear is small, and the life can reach tens of thousands of operations.

3. Electrical performance

Breaking capacity:

Vacuum circuit breakers have strong short-circuit current breaking capacity (especially suitable for medium voltage fields, such as 10-35 kV).

Oil circuit breakers are prone to reignition when breaking large currents.

Insulation strength:

The insulation strength of vacuum medium is much higher than that of oil medium, and the recovery speed is fast.

4. Application scenarios

Oil circuit breakers:

Traditional power systems (such as old substations), outdoor high-voltage occasions (such as above 110 kV).

Gradually replaced by SF₆ or vacuum circuit breakers.

Vacuum circuit breakers:

Dominated by medium voltage fields (6-40 kV), such as distribution networks, industrial electricity, rail transportation, etc.

High-frequency operation occasions (such as arc furnaces, motor control).

5. Environmental protection

Oil circuit breakers:

Insulating oil may leak and contaminate soil or water sources.

Vacuum circuit breakers:

No pollution, in line with modern environmental protection standards.

VTZ-12F generator output-specific vacuum circuit breaker by Shaanxi West Power Tongzhong Electrical Co., Ltd. is an indoor AC generator circuit breaker designed for 15kV three-phase AC systems operating at 50Hz. It is primarily used in the generator output circuits of small to medium hydroelectric power plants, thermal power plants, new energy power generation units, and industrial circuits with self-contained power supplies, such as those in the chemical and processing industries.

VTZ-12F generator output-specific vacuum circuit breaker has many features:

1.High current capacity, high breaking capability, advanced technical performance, and superior manufacturing quality.

2.The DC component of the rated short-circuit breaking current is ≥75%.Adopts an integrated operating mechanism. When installed individually, the rated current can reach up to 6300A with natural air cooling, and up to 8000A with forced air cooling.

3.Insulation utilizes an elliptical cross-section design to meet tensile and bending strength requirements, using high-strength insulating pull rods and support rods.

4.Grading rings are designed between insulators and supports to ensure uniform electric field distribution.

5.The circuit breaker uses a fixed installation method, and the main circuit meets air insulation distance requirements.

VTZ-12F generator output-specific vacuum circuit breaker can be used to Generators,

Main circuits of phase shifters,pumped-storage power plants

and Utility circuits in small and medium-capacity power plants.
