What are the causes of vacuum circuit breaker failure?

Common faults and causes of vacuum circuit breakers can be summarized into the following five categories, covering mechanical, electrical, and operational aspects:

 

1. Vacuum interrupter leakage

Causes: Tiny cracks may appear at the glass or ceramic seal due to vibration or impact during transportation or installation; defects in the vacuum bubble material or manufacturing process may lead to long-term leakage.

Symptoms: This usually occurs after one year of operation and is typically detected through a pressure test, requiring timely replacement.

 

2. Operating Mechanism Failure

Electrical Failure: Short circuit or open circuit in the closing/opening coil; abnormal operating power supply (voltage too high/too low); incorrect or broken wiring in the control circuit.

Mechanical Failure: Wear of transmission components (such as ratchet or pawl mechanisms); deformation or jamming of the opening rod, resulting in incomplete closing or weak opening.

 

3. Energy storage mechanism malfunction (common in spring-operated mechanisms)

Causes: Improper position or damage to the limit switch, or malfunction of the energy storage motor, resulting in insufficient energy storage or inability to release energy.

Consequences: The circuit breaker cannot be opened after closing, potentially leading to an escalation of the accident.

4. Abnormal Closing/Opening Operations

Closing without Operation: A malfunction in the closing holding mechanism or insufficient energy storage results in the contacts not closing properly.

Failure to Operate/Open: A secondary circuit malfunction or mechanical jamming manifests as no response to operating signals or the circuit breaker failing to operate.

 

5. Other Causes

External Factors: Excessive operating linkage distance affects the synchronicity of opening and closing, and long-term operation leads to a decline in mechanical performance.

Improper Operation: Misoperation or incorrect power switching may trigger the protection mechanism or directly damage the equipment.

Recommendations: Regularly perform vacuum level checks, withstand voltage tests, and mechanical component maintenance. Promptly check for electrical wiring errors to ensure the normal operation of the energy storage mechanism. When a fault occurs, prioritize checking the secondary circuit, then gradually check the mechanical parts.
