
In low-voltage power distribution systems, circuit breakers play the role of guardians of line safety. Their internal thermal and magnetic protection mechanisms, while sharing the same goal-interrupting fault current-have distinct functions, working together to form a complete protection chain from overload to short circuit.
Thermal Protection: The "Chronic Disease Expert" for Overloads
The core component of thermal protection is a bimetallic strip, made of two metals with different coefficients of thermal expansion welded together. When a sustained but not severe overload current occurs in the line, the bimetallic strip bends due to heat. The greater the current and the more severe the heating, the greater the bending and the shorter the time it takes to actuate the tripping mechanism. This inverse-time characteristic perfectly matches the heating characteristics of conductors and equipment-the more severe the overload, the faster the interruption.
It is specifically designed to handle overload situations that will not instantly destroy equipment, but whose sustained heating accelerates insulation aging.
Magnetic Protection: The "Flash" for Short Circuit Interception
Magnetic protection relies on electromagnets to handle short-circuit faults. When a short circuit occurs, the current instantly surges to several times or even tens of times the rated current. A massive short-circuit current flows through the electromagnetic coil, generating a strong magnetic field powerful enough to overcome the spring's reaction force. This instantly attracts the armature, triggering the tripping mechanism within milliseconds.
This instantaneous response speed is unmatched by thermal protection-if relying on the slow heating of the bimetallic strip to handle a short circuit, the conductor would have already overheated and melted, and the equipment would have burned out.
Each mechanism performs its specific function, seamlessly integrated
The two mechanisms each have their specialization: thermal protection handles "delayed disconnection" of overloads, while magnetic protection handles "instantaneous interception" of short circuits. Both are indispensable-with only magnetic protection, the normal inrush current during motor startup would lead to frequent false trips; with only thermal protection, there would be no time to react when a short circuit occurs.
It is this "dual insurance" division of labor that allows the circuit breaker to cover a full range of faults, from minor overloads to severe short circuits, becoming an indispensable safety barrier in the power system.
