Thermal Protection (Overload Protection)
Physical Mechanism:Based on the thermal effect of electric current. When the current in the circuit exceeds the rated value for an extended period (e.g., 1.13 to 1.45 times the rated current), internal heat generation intensifies.
Action Process: Heat causes a bimetallic strip to deform and bend. When the bending reaches a certain point, it actuates the mechanism, causing the circuit breaker to trip.
Characteristics and Function:It exhibits "inverse-time" characteristics-meaning the higher the overload current, the shorter the tripping time. It is primarily used to protect wires and cables, preventing insulation aging or fires caused by sustained heating.
Magnetic Protection (Short-Circuit Protection)
Physical Mechanism:Based on the electromagnetic effect of electric current. When a sudden, massive short-circuit current occurs (typically 5 to 12 times the rated current or higher), the magnetic field strength within the electromagnetic coil surges instantly.
Action Process: The powerful magnetic field overcomes the resistance of a counter-force spring, enabling the electromagnet to generate suction that pulls the iron core; this core directly strikes and triggers the tripping mechanism.
Characteristics and Function: It operates instantaneously (providing "instantaneous trip" protection), cutting off the circuit within milliseconds. It is primarily used to force the contacts apart during a short circuit, thereby protecting electrical equipment and ensuring personal safety.

A circuit breaker trip is usually a normal occurrence resulting from the breaker's protective function; it is a protective action taken in response to a fault.
