
A power plant ensures its generators rotate 3000 revolutions per minute thanks to a sophisticated closed-loop control system. This system is a perfect combination of physics formulas and automation technology.
China power grid frequency is 50Hz. According to the formula f = p * n / 60, when the generator's pole pair number p is 1, the rotational speed n must be 3000 revolutions per minute to generate 50Hz AC power.

How Does this Happen?
The system is mainly divided into the following layers to ensure this:
Design Setting
First, the core of the power plant-the steam turbine generator itself-is designed and manufactured with a predetermined setting. Large steam turbine generators used in 50Hz power grids almost all adopt a salient-pole rotor structure with one pair of magnetic poles (i.e., p=1), and its rated speed is naturally 3000 revolutions per minute. This fundamentally guarantees that as long as it rotates stably, the frequency will be stable.
Precise Control of Actuators
With the hardware capable of rotating at 3000 revolutions per minute, the next step is to ensure it rotates precisely at 3000 revolutions per minute. This task is accomplished by the speed control system of the prime mover.
Core Logic: The speed control system monitors the actual generator speed in real time and compares it with the set value of 3000 rpm.
Dynamic Adjustment: When the load increases and the speed tends to decrease, the system instructs the turbine to open more valves to increase the steam intake and "push" the speed back to 3000 rpm; conversely, when the load decreases and the speed may soar, it closes the valves to reduce the steam intake. You can think of it as an extremely precise car cruise control system.
Modern Brain DEH Protection
Modern large generator sets now use more advanced and intelligent digital electro-hydraulic control systems (DEH). Through computers and electro-hydraulic actuators, it automatically completes all the above adjustments with extremely high precision and response speed, and can command the unit to respond quickly when there are fluctuations in the power grid, ensuring the stability of the entire power system.
Overspeed Protection
What if the speed control system fails and the speed becomes uncontrollable? Don't worry, there is a final "golden rule"-the overspeed protection device. It is always on standby. Once it detects that the rotational speed exceeds a safe threshold (e.g., exceeding 3360 rpm), it will immediately take action, forcibly closing the turbine's inlet valves to safely shut down the unit and prevent catastrophic damage.
Therefore, through this complete system-from design to execution, to intelligent control and emergency protection-the power plant ensures that the generator can rotate precisely at 3000 rpm at all times, continuously supplying us with a stable frequency of electrical energy.
