Vacuum switches do require maintenance, and their operational reliability depends on the condition of mechanical components such as the control mechanism, contact assemblies, and switching elements. After enough operations, these parts will still wear, jam, and suffer spring fatigue.

The True Cause of the Malfunction

CIGRE statistics show that about 70% of high-voltage circuit breaker failures are mechanical, and the operating mechanism accounts for more than 60% of those. In other words, what really causes a breaker to "let you down" is often not the interrupter, but the mechanical parts.

Mechanical characteristic testing is like giving the breaker a "health check." It mainly measures opening and closing times, three-phase simultaneity, travel curves, opening and closing speeds, and bounce time. These data can reveal early problems such as contact wear, mechanism jamming, and buffer failure. For example, a noticeably longer opening time may indicate insufficient trip force; excessive three-phase simultaneity error can lead to open-phase interruption and threaten grid stability.

Enhancing Mechanical Property Testing

National standard GB/T 1984-2014 and power industry standard DL/T 403-2017 both set clear requirements for these parameters. State Grid Corporation of China's Eighteen Major Anti-Accident Measures for Power Grids also require strengthening mechanical characteristic testing. For vacuum circuit breakers in service, it is generally recommended to test every 3 to 6 years, or after the number of operations reaches a specified value.
