Self-Powered Solid-State Circuit Breakers Arrive, Designed For 800VDC AI Racks

How Will The Development Of Medium Voltage DC Distribution Affect The Requirements For Vacuum Circuit Breakers?

As the power requirements for AI server racks approach the megawatt scale, the adoption of 800V DC power distribution has shifted from a question of "if" to a question of "where it will be implemented first." However, higher voltages exacerbate an age-old challenge: DC current lacks a "zero-crossing" point. In circuits where short-circuit current can surge by tens to hundreds of amperes per microsecond, the multi-millisecond response time of mechanical circuit breakers is simply too slow. This has brought solid-state circuit breakers (SSCBs) to the forefront-yet traditional electronic circuit breakers face an awkward dilemma: they require their own power supply, which must be drawn from the 800V bus itself.

What Does "Self-Powered" Solve?

A solution announced this October by Power Integrations and Ideal Power transforms the "power supply" requirement from a burden into an integral part of the system architecture. Their 1700V InnoMux-2-built on PowiGaN (gallium nitride) technology-draws power directly from the 800V bus to provide multiple independent, isolated supply rails for gate drivers, sensing, and control circuitry. The main power path is managed by Ideal Power's B-TRAN bidirectional switch, which remains "normally on" during standard operation and can interrupt current within microseconds during a fault. A functional prototype has already been successfully tested, and a formal reference design is currently in development.

The key lies in the "normally on" characteristic. If a solid-state circuit breaker has a high on-state voltage drop, it becomes a bottleneck that generates constant heat. By utilizing GaN devices, the design maintains sufficient voltage margin on the 800V bus while shifting the power supply for control circuitry from an "external auxiliary source" to an "on-bus" self-powered configuration-eliminating the complexity and potential failure points associated with an external power supply.

Prototypes Are Not Final BOMs

The companies have demonstrated a functional prototype, but the reference design is not yet complete. For engineers, specific metrics-such as on-state power loss, interruption time under fault-current conditions, and selectivity (i.e., whether only the faulty branch is disconnected or the entire bus is shut down)-are far more critical for decision-making than the mere "solid-state" label itself. For a self-powered architecture, there is one failure scenario that requires separate validation: whether the gate-drive power supply remains available during a DC-bus voltage drop or a short-circuit event. While you can certainly look at collaborative news or press releases, do not rush to finalize the Bill of Materials (BOM).
