The International Energy Agency (IEA) released its "Mid-Year Electricity Market Update 2025" on July 30, stating that despite economic pressures, global electricity demand will continue to grow strongly through 2026, with renewable energy, natural gas, and nuclear power jointly meeting the increased demand.
The report forecasts that global electricity demand will grow by 3.3% in 2025 and 3.7% in 2026. While this is a slowdown from the 4.4% growth in 2024, it is still significantly higher than the average growth rate of 2.6% between 2015 and 2023. This continued growth is driven by increasing electricity demand in areas such as power supply for factories and appliances, building cooling, data center operations, and electric vehicle charging.
The report states that renewable energy is expected to surpass coal as the world's largest source of electricity as early as 2025 and at the latest 2026, a shift influenced by weather conditions and fuel price trends. Meanwhile, global nuclear power generation is expected to reach a record high, driven by the restart of nuclear reactors in Japan, strong growth in nuclear power in the US and France, and new nuclear power projects in Asia. Natural gas power generation will also continue to grow, gradually replacing coal and oil in the power sector in many regions.
The report also states that carbon dioxide emissions from the power sector are expected to plateau in 2025 and decline slightly in 2026.
