High Vacuum Environment–The Cornerstone of Arc Extinguishing
The core of a vacuum circuit breaker is its sealed arc-extinguishing chamber, with an internal pressure as low as below 10⁻³ Pa, resulting in extremely sparse gas molecules. This extreme vacuum environment makes intermolecular collisions and ionization virtually impossible, providing the physical prerequisite for rapid arc extinguishing.
The "Alternative" Nature of the Arc
When the contacts separate, the resulting arc is not formed by air ionization, but rather sustained by metal vapor evaporating from the contact surface. The high temperature of the arc causes localized melting and vaporization of the contact material (such as copper-chromium alloy), forming charged particles and a vapor cloud. However, the vacuum environment means there is no external gas supply; the vapor particles can only rely on the contacts themselves.
Zero-Crossing Arc Extinguishing and Rapid Recovery
When the alternating current passes through zero point each cycle, the arc temporarily loses energy. At this moment, the advantages of the vacuum become fully apparent: metal vapor particles, ions, and electrons diffuse outwards at extremely high speeds and rapidly condense on the contact surface and shielding. This process is completed within microseconds, resulting in a sharp increase in insulation strength between the breaks, effectively preventing arc reignition.
The Auxiliary Role of Magnetic Field Contacts
Furthermore, the contacts are often designed with spiral grooves or cup-shaped structures to generate longitudinal or transverse magnetic fields from the current, driving the arc to rotate on the contact surface and preventing localized overheating. This magnetic field, in conjunction with the vacuum environment, reduces contact erosion and further ensures the reliability of the breaking action. It is this ingenious combination of vacuum, steam characteristics, and precise design that enables vacuum circuit breakers to achieve their efficient and long-life arc-extinguishing capabilities.
