Glass Envelope vs. Ceramic Envelope: What Matters in the Housing of Vacuum Interrupters?

info-400-266
In power systems, vacuum circuit breakers play a critical role in interrupting fault currents, and the housing material of their core component-the vacuum interrupter-directly determines equipment service life and reliability.

Currently, mainstream products predominantly use either glass or ceramic envelopes.

Glass envelopes

With their mature manufacturing processes and lower cost, were widely applied in early-stage and medium- to low-voltage applications.

Their good transparency facilitates visual inspection of internal arc traces, but their mechanical strength is relatively limited, and they offer poor resistance to thermal shock.

Moreover, during prolonged interruption of large currents, the sputtering of metal vapor tends to degrade the insulation performance of the glass surface, compromising vacuum maintenance.

ceramic envelopes

In contrast, ceramic envelopes have become the preferred choice for high-voltage and large-capacity vacuum circuit breakers, owing to their superior electrical insulation strength, higher bending and compression resistance, and excellent thermal stability.

The sealing reliability between ceramic materials and metals is higher, effectively withstanding mechanical vibration during switching operations and short-circuit electrodynamic forces.

Meanwhile, their better arc erosion resistance ensures that the interrupter can maintain a high vacuum level even after dozens of full-capacity interruptions.

comparative advantage

Although ceramic packaging involves more complex manufacturing processes and is relatively expensive, its technical and cost advantages are becoming increasingly prominent as power grids demand longer maintenance-free intervals and greater adaptability to extreme environments.

Mainstream applications

At present, mainstream domestic switch manufacturers have generally adopted ceramic-envelope interrupters as the standard configuration for voltage levels of 110 kV and above, laying a solid foundation for the safe and stable operation of power systems from the material source.

If your system voltage is 27 kV or lower and does not require extremely frequent switching, vacuum circuit breakers are the preferred choice; their environmental friendliness and maintenance-free nature align better with modern power distribution trends.
