What is the Definition and difference between power system and power grid?

What is the Definition and difference between power system and power grid?

1. Power System

Definition: The whole production and consumption of electric energy consisting of power generation, substation, transmission, distribution, and power consumption, covering all electrical equipment and control systems.

Core components:

Power plant (thermal power, hydropower, wind power, etc.)

Substation (step-up/step-down transformer, switchgear)

Transmission line (high voltage/ultra-high voltage overhead line, cable)

Distribution network (medium and low voltage distribution cabinet, branch line)

Load center (industrial, commercial, residential power)

Control system (SCADA, relay protection, automatic dispatching)

Function:

✅ Power generation and transmission

✅ Voltage/frequency regulation

✅ Fault protection and recovery

2. Power Grid / Electrical Grid

Core components:

Transmission network (≥110kV, such as national main power grid)

Distribution network (≤35kV, such as urban distribution network)

Contact nodes (substations, switchgear)

Functions:

✅ Power transmission and distribution

✅ Grid interconnection (cross-regional power exchange)

✅ Flow control (through FACTS equipment)

3. The core differences between power system and power grid can be summarized as follows:

1) Scope difference

The power system is the whole chain ecology from production to consumption of electric energy, covering power plants, transmission and distribution networks, power equipment and control systems; the power grid only refers to the physical network of transmission and distribution (such as high-voltage lines, substations), which is equivalent to the "skeleton" of the power system.

2) Functional positioning

The power system is responsible for the management of the entire life cycle of electric energy (generation-transmission-distribution-consumption-regulation); the power grid focuses on power transmission and distribution, just like "blood vessels" that undertake transportation functions.

3)Components

Power system = power generation equipment + power grid + load + control system; power grid = transmission line + substation + distribution network. For example:

4. Technology development trends

Smart grid: integrating IoT and AI algorithms to achieve self-healing control

Microgrid: local new energy power generation + energy storage independent operation

DC grid: high voltage direct current (HVDC) reduces transmission losses

Summary: The power grid is the "vascular network" of the power system, and the power system is a complete ecosystem covering "heart (power generation) to extremities (power consumption)".
