What are the main functions of a high-voltage circuit breaker?

High-voltage vacuum circuit breakers are the most important control and protection electrical appliances in medium- and high-voltage power systems (typically 3kV to 40.5kV). Their core functions can be summarized as "control" and "protection," meaning they operate as reliable switches during normal system operation and act as sensitive protection devices to quickly respond to system faults.

The following is a detailed breakdown of their functions:

* Control Function (Operation under Normal Operating Conditions)

* Planned Switching: Based on the needs of power grid operation or maintenance, safely connects or disconnects power lines, transformers, capacitor banks, motors, and other electrical equipment under no-load or normal load current conditions. For example, planned power outages or restorations to a line.

* Switching Operations: Performs a series of switch opening and closing operations when changing the system operating mode.

* Protection Function (Automatic Tripping under Fault Conditions)

This is its most critical function. Triggered automatically by relay protection devices, it acts as the "last mechanical line of defense" for the power grid.

Short-circuit fault interruption: When a short-circuit fault (such as phase-to-phase or ground fault) occurs in a line or equipment, a fault current of up to tens of thousands of amperes can be generated. The circuit breaker must quickly disconnect within tens of milliseconds (usually 2-3 cycles, i.e., 40-60 ms), forcibly extinguishing the generated huge arc, completely isolating the faulty section from the power grid, preventing the fault from spreading, and protecting upstream power sources and other healthy equipment from damage caused by huge electrodynamic and thermal effects.

Overload current interruption: When the load current exceeds the allowable value of the equipment or line for a prolonged period, the overload protection drives the circuit breaker to trip to prevent overheating and insulation damage.

Selective tripping in conjunction with relay protection: Modern power grids employ multi-level protection. Vacuum circuit breakers can precisely coordinate with upstream and downstream protection devices to ensure that only the circuit breaker closest to the fault point is disconnected, thereby minimizing the fault isolation range and maximizing the continuity of power supply to non-faulty areas.

The core reason why vacuum circuit breakers can efficiently and reliably complete the above tasks lies in the vacuum interruptor they employ.

Ultra-high insulation and arc-extinguishing medium: The arc-extinguishing chamber maintains an extremely high vacuum (below 10⁻⁴ Pa), resulting in extremely rare gas molecules. Vacuum possesses extremely high insulation strength (far exceeding air and SF₆ gas), and the metal vapor plasma generated by the arc diffuses and recombines at an extremely fast speed (microseconds) after the current crosses zero, thus achieving "zero-current" arc extinguishing.

Key advantages:

High breaking capacity: Can quickly and reliably interrupt short-circuit currents, capacitive currents (such as cables and capacitor banks), and inductive currents (such as motors and transformers).

Long lifespan: The contacts are not easily oxidized in a vacuum, and the arc erosion of the contacts is minimal. The electrical and mechanical lifespan (typically 10,000-20,000 operations) is far longer than that of oil-less or oil-filled circuit breakers.

Safe and environmentally friendly: The medium is vacuum, eliminating the risk of fire and explosion, and does not produce toxic gases (such as SF₆ decomposition products), making it an environmentally friendly device.

Easy Maintenance: The arc-extinguishing chamber is a fully sealed, non-removable structure, requiring virtually no maintenance and resulting in low operating costs.

Specific Application Scenarios in Power Systems

 

Generation Side: Used in plant power systems as auxiliary equipment controlling generator outputs.

 

Transmission and Transformation Side: Serves as a 10kV/35kV outgoing switch in substations, forming the backbone of the distribution network. Also commonly used on the medium-voltage side of main transformers.

Distribution Side: Used as incoming and outgoing switches in switching stations, ring main units, and distribution rooms to achieve segmentation, interconnection, and user access in the distribution network.

User Side: Serves as the main step-down substation or distribution center in large industrial and mining enterprises, high-rise buildings, and infrastructure (such as subways and airports), acting as the core for power reception and internal power distribution protection and control.

 

Special Load Control: Particularly suitable for frequent operation applications, such as the switching of electric arc furnaces and high-voltage motors in the metallurgical and chemical industries, due to its long lifespan and operational durability.
