Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) - Electric Arc

What is An electric arc?

An electric arc, also known as an arc discharge, is a gas discharge phenomenon. Essentially, it's a continuous, high-energy luminescence produced when an electric current passes through ionized gas (plasma) between two electrodes.

An electric arc is produced when a sufficiently high voltage is applied and ionization is triggered.

The essence of an electric arc is the continuous luminescence and heat generated when an electric current overcomes the resistance of air (or other insulators) and passes through an ionized, conductive gas (i.e., plasma).

Characteristics

of an Electric Arc

 extremely high temperature

The core temperature of electric arc can reach 3000℃ to over 20000℃, enough to melt or even vaporize most metals.

powerful light

An electric arc is a powerful light source containing a large amount of ultraviolet radiation, which can damage the retina if viewed directly with the naked eye.

An electric arc

high energy density

The energy of an electric arc is highly concentrated in a small area.

plasma flow and shock waves

An electric arc possesses plasma flow and shock waves, generating explosive impact forces in accidents, causing physical damage and personal injury.

how To protect Yourself (Basicly)

Electric arcs can cause the following harms: damage to the eyes and skin from intense light (including ultraviolet radiation), burns from high temperatures, hearing damage (from shockwaves), and the risk of electric shock.

Wear a welding face shield/helmet

electric arc

Wear flame-retardant fabric work clothes

electric arc

Wear dedicated welding gloves or flame-retardant gloves

electric arc

Wear insulated, impact-resistant, and puncture-resistant safety shoes

And also do not forget wear explosion-proof earplugs or earmuffs to protect your hearing.

Conclusion

While personal protective equipment (PPE) can reduce burns, the explosive force of an arc flash is immense and cannot provide complete protection. The primary goal of PPE is to limit the degree of burns caused by arc flash to no more than second-degree burns. However, even with appropriate protective equipment, the immense force of an arc flash can still cause serious injury or even death.
