Can Vacuum Circuit Breakers Work in Low-Temperature Environments?

Why are the secondary phase voltages of a voltage transformer 100V and 100/3V?

When harsh winters arrive, electrical equipment often faces severe challenges. The question is: can vacuum circuit breakers still operate reliably in extremely cold conditions? The answer is yes, but only if several key technical details are considered.

Vacuum Interruptor: Low Temperature Not a Fatal Flaw

The core of a vacuum circuit breaker is the vacuum interrupter, which maintains a high vacuum state internally. Its insulation strength and arc-extinguishing capability are almost unaffected by ambient temperature. Theoretically, a vacuum has no "freezing point," and low temperatures do not alter its physical properties. Therefore, in principle, cold weather is not a fatal threat to vacuum circuit breakers.

The Real Weak Point: Operating Mechanism and Lubrication

The real vulnerability of vacuum circuit breakers in extremely cold conditions lies in their operating mechanism. This component relies heavily on grease. When the temperature drops below -30°C, ordinary grease will significantly thicken or even solidify, leading to increased friction in the transmission components, sluggish operation, and exceeding standard opening and closing times. In severe cases, this can cause the circuit breaker to fail to operate or trip malfunction-this is the biggest safety hazard.

Solutions: Three Key Selection Considerations

To ensure reliable operation of vacuum circuit breakers in extremely cold conditions, the following three key factors should be considered during selection:

●Special Low-Temperature Grease: Use a special grease with a low pour point and low low-temperature torque to ensure that mechanical transmission components can still move flexibly in environments as cold as -40°C.

●Impregnated Terminal Technology: The vacuum interrupter is integrally encapsulated with epoxy resin or polymer materials to prevent condensation and ice crystals from adhering to the interrupter surface, avoiding a decrease in insulation performance.

●Complete Low-Temperature Type Testing and Certification: It is essential to require the supplier to provide a -40°C complete unit type test report to verify the stability of mechanical characteristics under extreme low temperatures.

Practical Applications: Validated in Extremely Cold Regions

Currently, low-temperature optimized vacuum circuit breakers are widely used in high-latitude regions of China, such as Heilongjiang, Inner Mongolia, and Xinjiang, as well as in power distribution networks and railway power supply systems in internationally cold regions such as Canada and Siberia. Taking the Sichuan-Tibet Railway in China as an example, substations equipped with fully sealed structures and low-temperature mechanisms have been operating reliably for many years at altitudes above 4000 meters and winter temperatures as low as -35°C, maintaining a reliability rate consistently above 99.5%.

Conclusion

Low temperatures will not "frozen" the vacuum interrupter itself, but without proper precautions, it may "freeze" the operating mechanism. The core conclusion is that the key is not whether the vacuum circuit breaker can operate at low temperatures, but whether the appropriate product has been selected for the specific environment. By emphasizing lubrication solutions, sealing processes, and low-temperature testing and certification, vacuum circuit breakers are fully capable of ensuring the safe operation of the power system in the harshest winter environments.
