Why Is Temperature Rise Control Important For Vacuum Circuit Breakers? What Happens During Long-Term Overheating?

Switchgear Is Becoming The Next Critical Bottleneck in The Supply Chain
As industrial power distribution, renewable energy, and power infrastructure continue to develop, greater attention is being paid to the long-term operating performance of medium voltage switchgear. As an important component in medium voltage distribution systems, vacuum circuit breakers inevitably generate a certain amount of heat while carrying operating current over long periods. As a result, temperature rise control has become an important consideration in equipment design, manufacturing, and operation. Proper temperature management not only affects the performance of the circuit breaker itself but is also closely related to the safe operation of the overall power distribution system.

Temperature Rise Directly Affects Long-Term Operation

The conductive circuit of a vacuum circuit breaker includes contacts, conductive rods, primary connection components, and terminals. When operating current continuously passes through these components, a certain amount of Joule heat is generated. If contact resistance becomes excessive at a particular point, heat may accumulate locally and cause the temperature to rise continuously. Long-term operation at elevated temperatures can accelerate the aging of insulation materials and certain structural components, making temperature rise an important reference for evaluating equipment operating conditions.

High-Load Operation Creates Higher Demands on Heat Dissipation

As industrial equipment, renewable energy systems, data centers, and other electrical loads continue to expand, medium voltage distribution equipment may face longer periods of high-load operation. Under these conditions, circuit breakers need not only reliable current-carrying capability but also effective thermal design. The structure of the conductive circuit, contact performance, insulation materials, and internal equipment layout can all affect heat transfer. Proper thermal design can help prevent excessive local temperature rise and support stable equipment operation.

Temperature Monitoring Becomes an Important Part of Maintenance

For medium voltage switchgear operating over long periods, periodic offline inspections alone may not fully reflect temperature changes under actual load conditions. Infrared temperature measurement and online monitoring can be used to observe temperature changes at circuit breaker contacts, terminals, and other critical points. When the temperature of a particular area becomes abnormal or increases significantly compared with historical data, timely inspection can help identify issues such as poor contact, loose connections, or abnormal loading.
Overall, as medium voltage distribution equipment moves toward higher loads and longer operating periods, temperature control and thermal management of vacuum circuit breakers are receiving increasing attention. By optimizing conductive structures, improving heat dissipation, and strengthening operating-condition monitoring, the adverse effects of long-term overheating can be reduced, providing more reliable support for the stable operation of medium voltage power distribution systems.
