Vacuum Circuit Breakers: Why Does the Arc Extinguish Faster in the Absence of Air?

Air is not the "fuel" for the arc

In practice, a vacuum interrupter is pumped down to below 10⁻⁴ Pa, so there is almost no gas left inside. When its contacts pull apart, the strong electric field strips electrons from the metal surfaces. Those electrons slam into the contacts and vaporize tiny spots of the copper-chromium material. The arc is then sustained by this metal-vapor plasma, not by air.

Metal vapor rapidly "vanishes" at current zero

When the alternating current passes through zero, the arc temporarily loses its energy source. In the vacuum, there are virtually no gas molecules to impede movement; metal vapor particles diffuse at high speeds, condensing back into a solid state upon contact with the electrodes or the shielding, while charged particles rapidly recombine. Consequently, dielectric strength recovers within microseconds, making arc reignition unlikely.

Longitudinal magnetic fields stabilize arc quenching

Modern vacuum circuit breakers often employ contacts that generate a longitudinal magnetic field. This constrains the arc into a diffuse mode, causing cathode spots to migrate rapidly and preventing localized overheating or contact welding. Under full-rated short-circuit current, such breakers can typically perform reliable interruptions dozens of times, with a mechanical lifespan reaching tens of thousands of operations.

Thus, the rapid quenching of the arc in a vacuum is not due to the absence of air for "insulation," but rather because the metal vapor-upon which the arc depends-has nowhere to linger.
