Four Common Operating States of a 10kV Vacuum Circuit Breaker

In power distribution systems, it is very important to correctly identify the operating status of a vacuum circuit breaker is essential for ensuring safe operation and reliable equipment performance. For draw-out type 10kV vacuum circuit breakers, the equipment status is typically classified into four categories based on the breaker position, main circuit connection, and safety measures: In Service, Hot Standby, Cold Standby, and Maintenance.

I. In-Service Status

In-service status refers to a condition in which the circuit breaker is energized and actively supplying power to the load.

 Key Indicators:

VCB is in the closed position;

The truck is in the service position;

The main circuit is energized and operating normally;

Power is being supplied to the load side;

Protection and control circuits are in normal operation.

At this stage, the equipment is operating normally, and actions such as moving the breaker truck are strictly prohibited.

II. Hot Standby Status

Hot standby status means the equipment is ready for service and can be energized quickly when required.

 Key Indicators:

VCB is in the open position;

The truck is in the service position;

The main circuit remains connected;

Protection and control circuits are in normal operation;

The breaker can be closed at any time to restore power.

In hot standby status, the equipment is not supplying power to the load but remains ready for immediate operation.

III. Cold Standby Status

Cold standby status refers to a condition in which the equipment has been disconnected from the operating system but remains in good condition and can be returned to service when required.

 Key Indicators:

VCB is in the open position;

The truck is in the test position;

The main circuit is disconnected from the busbar;

Direct energization is not possible;

Required inspections and operating procedures must be completed before returning the equipment to service.

Cold standby status is commonly used when equipment is temporarily removed from operation but kept available for future use.

IV. Maintenance Status

Maintenance status refers to a condition in which the equipment has been safely isolated and the necessary safety measures have been implemented, allowing maintenance work to be carried out.

 Key Indicators:

VCB is in the open position;

The truck is in the test position or has been withdrawn from the switchgear;

The equipment is reliably isolated from the operating system;

The grounding switch is closed, or other reliable grounding measures have been applied;

Safety tags and anti-misoperation measures have been installed in accordance with operating procedures.

In maintenance status, inspection, testing, and maintenance work may be carried out in accordance with the applicable work permit procedures.

Precautions for Status Transitions

Status transitions should be carried out strictly in accordance with operating procedures and generally follow the sequence below:

In Service → Hot Standby → Cold Standby → Maintenance

During operation:

Never rack the breaker in or out while it is carrying load current;

Never close the grounding switch when the circuit is energized;

Never remove safety measures without authorization;

Always follow applicable site operating procedures.

Correctly identifying the operating status of equipment helps ensure personnel safety, protect equipment, reduce the risk of misoperation, and improve overall system reliability.
