Do vacuum circuit breakers have a service life?

Vacuum circuit breakers have a defined service life, which is affected by both mechanical and electrical life, as detailed below:

Mechanical life

The lifespan depends primarily on the number of contact opening and closing cycles, typically around 10,000 (each opening and closing of the energy storage circuit breaker counts as one cycle), with some products reaching 5,000 cycles. Frequent operation will lead to contact wear and depletion. Mechanical lifespan is affected by factors such as the reliability of the operating mechanism and the contact opening distance (approximately 10mm for 10KV models).

Electrical life

Electrical life refers to the number of times the rated short-circuit current or rated operating current can be interrupted. The end of the electrical life can be determined by the allowable wear thickness of the contacts; when the contact wear reaches a specified value, the electrical life of the arc-extinguishing chamber is considered to have ended.

Determined by electrical performance, primarily influenced by current rating and arc-extinguishing performance. Contact electrical wear is minimal, with an electrical life typically lasting for several dozen operations; the overall lifespan is dominated by mechanical life.

Influencing factors

Environment: High temperatures, high altitudes, and humid environments accelerate equipment aging.

Maintenance: Regular maintenance extends lifespan and prevents malfunctions.

Load: Overload operation leads to overheating and shortens lifespan.

Typical life range

Domestically produced conventional VTZ-12 vacuum circuit breaker typically have a mechanical lifespan of 6,000-10,000 cycles, while international high-reliability standards (such as IEC) require a mechanical lifespan of ≥10,000 cycles. Electronic lifespan is usually determined by mechanical lifespan, with an overall lifespan reaching up to 20 years.

What are the causes of overheating in high-voltage vacuum circuit breakers?

In summary

The lifespan of vacuum circuit breakers is primarily determined by mechanical lifespan, with electrical lifespan playing a secondary role. Actual lifespan is influenced by a combination of factors, including environment, maintenance, and load.
